UPSL Announces Midwest Expansion with Michigan Rebels FC

Robert Brinkman Also Named UPSL Womens Midwest Conference Manager

October 10, 2019 – Los Angeles – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) announces Rebels FC as a new member of the Midwest Conference kicking off with the 2020 Spring Season.

Based in Macomb (Mich.), Rebels FC will operate teams in both the UPSL Midwest Conference's East Division, and the UPSL Women's Division Midwest Conference.

Additionally, Rebels FC Owner Robert Brinkman has agreed to serve as UPSL Michigan Division Manager, and UPSL Women's Division Midwest Conference Manager, effective immediately.

United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "Rebels FC are a great addition to the UPSL's Midwest Conference. Our new UPSL Michigan Division Manager, Rebels FC Owner Robert Brinkman, sees the opportunity for growth within the State of Michigan with both his club and the league, and has placed both the Rebels FC men's and women's first teams into the UPSL as a commitment to that growth. We're excited to work with Robert on building out the Michigan Division as expanding our management team is a focus for the Midwest Conference. We look forward to a long-term relationship with both Rebels FC and Robert Brinkman."

Robert Brinkman is Owner of Rebels FC. A native of Michigan, Brinkman graduated from Grand Rapids (Mich.) Central High School and is a certified Paramedic. He also currently is the Associate Head Coach at Beverly Hills (Mich.)'s Birmingham Groves High School.

"My goal for Rebels FC is to get players who wanted to play in college the opportunity to get looked at by college coaches. We've had several players get offers since we started this. I think the UPSL is the next evolution for Rebels FC. We want to be an option for players who are sick of the politics of clubs. We are a family. With the interest that we've received in the last year and the players that we've brought out, and the interest moving forward from players, this just makes sense to go into the UPSL. We're going to build a quality team and just continue to grow," Brinkman said.

It's already been a newsworthy calendar year for Rebels FC. The men's team finished second overall during the 2019 Season in the Michigan Premier Soccer League (MPSL), and recently absorbed Detroit (Mich.)-based Metro Rangers SC, with Karic Jones now Rebels FC General Manager. Rebels FC's women's team won the MPSL League Cup in 2019, and several of its players received collegiate scholarships. Also, Justin King now is General Manager of the club's Over-30 Men's Team (MPSL). The club will be making more announcements about mergers, coaching hires and new team structures in the very near future.

The UPSL Michigan Division will begin play with the 2020 Spring Season. More teams will be announced in the coming weeks. Brinkman will promote UPSL's national structure to local teams and clubs that fit with the league's model while working to secure sponsorships.

"The biggest thing is adding quality teams into an already competitive UPSL Midwest Conference, and that will be my focus. The standard for me is high, and I'll make sure that the UPSL National Standards are met and communication is clear, so I see this as a natural fit," Brinkman said.
